What kinds of projects does Goochland YouthNet sponsor?
The short answer is all sorts. There are many challenges around us. Which do you feel moved to face? What solutions, big or small, can you imagine?
Here are some examples of community initiatives started by kids. Use these ideas for inspiration if you like, but remember to apply your unique perspective, talents, and imagination to the issue you care about:
10-year old Christian Bucks was concerned about kids feeling lonely on the
playground, so he built a Buddy Bench to give kids a safe place to sit and to
let other kids know that a new friend is waiting. There are now more than
2,000 Buddy Benches across the U.S.
"Caleb’s library project brought 3,000 Detroit youths together last April to
turn one room in each city shelter into a reading room filled with shelves of
donated books, bright lighting, cozy chairs, new floors and colorful art for
freshly-painted walls." The Caleb White Project, headed by 14-year old
Caleb, finds many unique ways to address homelessness.
A'Layah Robinson's Lemonade for Love
A'Layah, who spent the first years of her life in foster care, wanted to show
children still in the foster system that people care about them. She started a
lemonade stand and has raised thousands of dollars to distribute
"Love Packages" for foster children all across the U.S.
Other ideas to consider: collect blankets and supplies to help
Goochland Animal Care and Control care for shelter animals; start
a fancy dress exchange to give everyone a chance to look good at prom;
launch a Teen Read-to-Me club that pairs teens with younger kids for
story time; bring a speaker to your school club to talk about an issue that
matters to you; organize a blood drive-- what will you think of?
